4xmotion Touaregs are the greatest SUV

4xmotion Touaregs are the greatest SUV

A few years ago when the Aussie FB page was created a couple of brothers, a dad and a good mate headed off to tour the Flinders Ranges and travel the Simpson Desert on a 3 week trek.  The choice of vehicles were a little unconventional;

957 3.0 Cayenne, 7P 3.0 TDI 4XMOTION,  Discovery TD4 and a GU 4.2D Turbo Patrol.

Nothing was a challenge at all for the Euro vehicles.  All had their strengths and weaknesses, (I'm still unsure of the patrol though, I guess its big and can pack a lot?) The 957 was on air and rode the corrugations like nothing, the 4xmotion had the rear locker for amazing crawling ability through the Flinders harsh rocks,  the TD4 used minimal diesel and floated its way over every dune with ease.  The patrol with its missing radius arm nut, cracked diff housing and failing alternator gave us plenty to talk about over the camp fire.

When we arrived at Big Red the task was set.  No runs ups and the hard tracks only.  The Euro 3.0 TDIs blasted their way up with ease.  The TD4 needed a extra low tyre pressure and a full throttle effort, the patrol, well it needed a few attempts, huge runs ups, changes of lane to the easiest option and eventually made it too the top.  These tracks don't need rock crawlers.

If you ever are hesitant to take yours on an adventure in the Aussie outback, don't be.  A well maintained nearly stock Cayenne, Touareg or Q7  will have you smiling the whole way.  I little lift and some all terrain tyres is all you need.  Keep it simple, keep it light, and you'll be impressed.
